Getting Married in Midleton Parish<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The parish of Midleton is very happy to facilitate the celebration of your wedding in one of our churches. The following guidelines are issued as a help to you in planning and preparing for your big day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n
  1. The churches in our parish are very special and sacred buildings, which are living places of worship. They hold a unique place in the minds and hearts of our parishioners. This means that some things which might be acceptable in another venue, such as hotel or hall, are not appropriate for a church or in church grounds. In particular, no food or drink should be distributed or consumed in the church or church grounds.<\/li>\n\n
  2. The wedding ceremony itself may take place within a Mass or outside of a Mass. Each is equally valid. Where one of the couple and\/or a large number of guests are not Catholics, we strongly recommend a ceremony outside of Mass.<\/li>\n\n
  3. Music during the ceremony should be religious in nature, and appropriate for the occasion. It should also respect the liturgical season of the year.<\/li>\n\n
  4. Readings during the ceremony are always to be taken from the Bible. Reflections from other sources can be included towards the end of the ceremony if required, but cannot replace the biblical readings and must be in tune with the spirit of the religious ceremony. The priest solemnising your wedding will be able to help you in selecting readings and prayers of the faithful for your ceremony.<\/li>\n\n
  5. Flowers may be placed in the church but should not obscure the altar. They should also be in tune with the liturgical season. In particular, during the season of Lent flowers should be minimal. Please note that no lit candles, lanterns etc are allowed outside of the sanctuary area. At certain times of the year, such as Christmas and Easter, there will already be an abundance of flowers in the church, and you may not need to provide any.<\/li>\n\n
  6. Photographers and video camera operators should be discreet and respect the sacredness of the occasion.<\/li>\n\n
  7. You are welcome to invite any priest or deacon in good standing to solemnise your marriage. If the priest is from outside the diocese of Cloyne and resident in Ireland he must produce his celebret <\/em>on the day. (The priest will know what this means.) If he is living abroad then he needs to contact the diocesan office in Cobh in order to be nominated as a civil solemniser for the marriage. The email address is info@cloynediocese.ie<\/a><\/li>\n\n
  8. Couples living in the parish of Midleton who want a priest of the parish to solemnise their marriage are advised to ask the relevant priest in good time. Do not assume the priest who has filled in the marriage papers with you will be available if you have not asked him. Similarly, if you wish the priest to attend your reception please make this clear to him beforehand.<\/li>\n\n
  9. Couples living outside the parish of Midleton will need to arrange a priest from outside the parish to solemnise their marriage, perhaps one from the parish in which they are living. Please note that in accepting your booking, the parish does not accept any responsibility to provide a priest on the day.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Church Paperwork<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    A certain amount of church paperwork must be completed in the parish in which you are now living. You will need to contact a priest there to complete it with you and to advise you what documents you will need to produce. This should be done in good time before the wedding as it may take some time to source the relevant documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Each catholic getting married will need to complete a Prenuptial Inquiry Form with one of the priests of the parish in which he\/she is currently residing. Please contact one of the priests of the parish to arrange an appointment. When meeting with the priest to complete the papers, you will need to bring:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \n
    1. A Certificate of Baptism from the parish where you were baptised.<\/li>\n\n
    2. A Certificate of Confirmation from the parish where you were confirmed.<\/li>\n\n
    3. Letter(s) of Freedom: Needed if you lived for more than six months in a parish other than your current one since you were aged 16. (Not required for college years.)<\/li>\n\n
    4. Evidence of pre-marriage preparation. (A Certificate will be issued to you at the end of the pre-marriage course).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      All couples getting married are expected to complete a pre-marriage course. The recommended course in this parish is provided by ACCORD. Further details may be found at https:\/\/www.accord.ie\/services\/marriage-preparation<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Civil Paperwork<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      You must give at least three months\u2019 notice of your wedding to the civil registrar. You are advised to contact your nearest registrar\u2019s office in good time, as you may have to wait for an appointment. You will need to bring certain documents, including the names and addresses of your two witnesses, the priest or deacon who will solemnise the wedding as well as pay a fee. The registrar will then issue you with a Marriage Registration Form which must be shown to the solemniser before the wedding. Please note that without this form the wedding cannot go ahead.       Fees<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      There is no fee for use of the church for parishioners of Midleton parish. Couples from outside the parish are asked for \u20ac100 which goes to the upkeep of the church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      It is customary to give a donation to the priest solemnising the wedding. There is no set figure for this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      A donation to the sacristan who will prepare the church on the day and be present during the ceremony is appreciated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Please note that no couple will be prevented from celebrating a church wedding in Midleton parish for financial reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
