History of St. Colman’s Church
St. Colman’s Church was built immediately prior to the famine period between 1839 and 1842 on land acquired from Viscount Midleton.
In 1839 the site for this church was acquired from Viscount Midleton in the town land of Farrantrenchard on the banks of Loughaderra. The building works were completed by 1842. St. Colman’s Church replaced an older thatched church situated near Ballintotis Castle which had become unsuitable for public use. A famine grave plot stands near the back wall of the present church car park as a memorial to the victims who were buried there in the 1840s.
